How Leaders Create a Culture That People Feel
How do people feel about your culture?
I didn’t ask how people THINK about your culture, how do they FEEL???
In 2014, the USA Men’s National Basketball Team was led by Mike “Coach K” Krzyzewski. To understand the value and importance of representing the United States of America and how special the honor was, he brought them all to the West Point Cemetery. There, they met with and listened to family members of fallen soldiers. They heard stories of how children died serving their country.
The players listened intensely to the deeply personal stories, the feelings of the loss of the family members. They truly got it: sacrifice– service– and pride.
How can you create a feeling of purpose?
What story can you share that connects to the heart and emotions of your team members?
What image or picture can you paint that creates a renewed culture?
The players may have understood the concepts of service and sacrifice before, but seeing the graves of fallen soldiers and listening to the stories created a purpose-driven team on a mission for their country.
May you be inspired to keep building your culture!
